It really does pay

So I thought The Huz would blog about this, but I think he may have forgotten his password to sign in to his blog, because he hasn't blogged since 'Nam. Anyway, many of you that know us, know that we like to be involved in local politics. And when I say "we," The Huz is probably more accurate. He is a responsible citizen and attends city council meetings and other public hearings that are pertinent to our community and our little family. Many of you know that we went up against the Great and Spacious Building a.k.a. Holly Oil and settled out-of-court on their purchase of our home. So you could say that we like to mix it up. Basically, it boils down to the fact that we don't like being taken advantage of and we especially don't like being ripped off. Neither of us make a ton of money, so when we have to part with it and do not believe it is for a fair reason/fair amount, we are likely to revolt. No, we haven't thrown any tea off of a large shipping vessel, but we did try our luck at appealing our 2008 property taxes. You see, Davis County, UT seems to think they are way cooler than any other county out there and have exorbitant property taxes on the majority of their residential properties. Enter the purchase of our new home. We knew when we purchased it that it had been taxed unreasonably high but we planned to appeal the taxes to a more accurate value. September came and we opened our property tax notice and were not surprised that they were the same as last year - excessively high. That's when The Huz started the appeal process. I will spare you, dear reader, the details of the following four months and what he went through. Needless to say, he was basically threatened that if he didn't pay the amount due then the county would take legal action and terms like liens were thrown out. In December, The Huz said okay then, give me a court date. Fast forward to today: I checked the mail and began to open a notice from the County Tax Commission, thinking here we go with our hearing date and consequential legal battle. The letter said, "Agreement with your proposed value."

So here's the moral of the story: when someone or some institution (namely Davis County Tax Commission) threatens you that you are going to have to get an act of congress to change your amount of taxes owed, just say you'll go along with what they propose and then they'll give in. Apparently, they don't really mean it.

Good for you! I hate city/county government. Too much governing with too many chiefs. BTW - could you please explain Jameson's pix on the side of your blog? From this angle it looks like a Christmas village in carnage.

Jameson has a thing for sprinkles. He uses glue and decorates paper plates with them. He discovered that he could make a "Christmas Town" in the snow with them as well. Instead of carnage, it's just red sugar crystals. Mom used the decorator gel to write 'Candy Xmas Town'. I believe he'll be offering a class at Super Saturday later this year...
